Bioaugmentation-Enhanced Remediation of Crude Oil Polluted Water in Pilot-Scale Floating Treatment Wetlands

Floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) are cost-effective systems for the remediation of polluted water. In FTWs, metabolic activity microorganisms associated with plants is fundamental to efficiency. Bioaugmentation, addition pollutant-degrading capabilities, appears be a promising means enhance efficiency FTWs. Here, we quantified effect bioaugmentation four-membered bacterial consortium on water contaminated crude oil in pilot-scale FTWs planted Phragmites australis or Typha domingensis. The bacteria had been isolated from endosphere and rhizosphere various carry alkane hydroxylase gene, alkB, involved aerobic hydrocarbon degradation. During period 36 days, P. achieved reduction concentration 300 mg/L 16 56 without bioaugmentation. T. domingensis, respective concentrations were 46 84 mg/L. inoculated proliferated rhizoplane plant interior. Copy numbers alkB gene its mRNA increased over time plant-associated samples, suggesting results show that improved oil-contaminated by at least factor two, indicating performance full-scale can only small costs.
